When fighting the good fight, a little help from your fellow men goes a long way. Fortunately, in this war waged against the COVID-19 virus, a gritty yet devoted few deemed it their purpose, mission, and calling to serve the greater good.
As challenging as our current situation has been for everyone, the fact remains that we were kept out of harm’s way - able to work and be with our loved ones in the safety of our own homes - because our public and private health workers heeded the call to lead the fight against this pandemic.
In response to their heroic acts, STI College Ortigas-Cainta opened its doors to 31 health workers of Cainta Municipal Hospital, providing much-needed temporary shelter after painfully long shifts. In addition, the STI Alumni Association (STIAA) ensured that these frontliners had hot meals waiting for them before and after their tiring work schedules. During these heroes' month-long stay, STIAA also launched a donation campaign among its members with 100% of the proceeds being utilized to help address these health workers' various needs.
Our fight against this pandemic, one that can affect anyone regardless of religion, race and social background, has opened our eyes that true wealth is our health. Furthermore, in the implementation of the ECQ, we realized the importance of family that we otherwise often take for granted due to our busy schedules. It is truly fortunate that we have health workers who have nurtured our health even as they have had to risk their own safety as well as sacrifice their valuable time with their families. As a nation, the best the rest of us can do is show that we are also part of a nation of everyday heroes because bringing out the best in each and every one of us is the only way we will get through this difficult time. |
