STI joins Books for Asia Program
| | Staying true to its commitment of providing opportunities to Filipino youth, STI signed a Memorandum of Agreement (MOA) with The Asia Foundation on August 19, 2015 led by STI President Monico V. Jacob and The Asia Foundation Country Representative Dr. Steven Rood. The partnership is another milestone in STI’s advocacy to empower the future through educational opportunities for public school teachers, students, and disadvantaged youths.
In this collaboration, STI provided substantial monetary donation to support Books for Asia Program’s provision of 5,148 high quality reference materials to 78 STI schools. In return, the partnership apportioned another set of 5,148 reference books for donation to 78 public high schools. In a nutshell, each STI school will benefit in the donation including community public high schools. Through STI Head Office as the main proponent, the partnership aims to ensure the continuance of this program.
“The Books for Asia program is only the first step to further collaboration between our organizations. We are humbled with this partnership knowing that The Asia Foundation has been committed to improving lives across a dynamic and developing Asia for six decades. As a partner, STI schools will further strengthen English literacy and infuse the love of reading to our students, and extend the same opportunity to a chosen public high school recipient,” shares STI President Monico V. Jacob.
“We’re elated to be partnering with STI. As one of the pioneers in implementing Senior High School in the Philippines, together we can work towards empowering the youth and expanding reading opportunities for individuals and communities. We believe in the power of education and that it can transform lives,” says Country Representative of The Asia Foundation Dr. Steven Rood.
Books for Asia (BFA) is a remarkably successful and highly valued program of The Asia Foundation that regularly distributes books for all educational levels throughout the Philippines and the rest of Asia. Since 1954, BFA has distributed more than 14 million books and journals to public and private institutions across the Philippines. The Asia Foundation (through BFA) view this as a contribution to national development, international understanding, and English-language literacy for more than six decades. The books were generously donated to the BFA Program by prestigious publishers in the US that includes McGraw-Hill, Pearson Education, W. W. Norton, Wiley, Island Press, Abrams, LexisNexis, Simon & Schuster, Macmillan, Penguin, Hachette, Scholastic, etc.
Books for Asia expands opportunities for individuals, communities, and nations by putting brand-new books and digital content in English and local languages into the hands of students, educators, and local and national leaders. Through donations and technology initiatives, the program helps infuse young students with an early love of reading essential for literacy; build knowledge in the business, legal, and science professions; sharpen vocational and research ability; and enhance much needed English-language skills to compete in the global economy.
